Kung Long goes green by branching into renewable energy batteries

Born in a farmer’s family, young man Li Yao-ming set up the Guangxing Textile Plant in 1969 by virtue of the entrepreneurial spirit. But his textile factory was destroyed by fire in 1988.

Such serious damage forced Li to start from scratch. He turned to invest in a new factory that made batteries. Unfortunately, this battery plant soon went out of business due to its chairman’s departure and poor management.

Li was forced to take over the chairman of this battery factory. Interestingly enough, this sudden change indirectly contributed to the establishment of Kung Long Batteries Industrial Co.

In 1990, Li founded Kung Long in Nantou City, whose main products include lead-acid batteries, electronic sealed batteries, motorbike sealed batteries, and traditional motorbike batteries. On January 22, 2002, Kung Long was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) to become the only professional lead-acid battery manufacturer in Taiwan that owns a bonded factory and goes public.

Kung Long has a complete production line and innovative technology. Since its inception in 1990, the Nantou City-based company has developed more than 400 types of batteries for different uses.

From 1993 on, Kung Long continued to work with the Material and Chemical Research Laboratories of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop deep-cycle sealed batteries, electric scooter batteries, and high-power surface modified batteries.

In 2011, Kung Long started to invest resources in large telecommunication batteries, electric golf cart batteries, UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system, and electric vehicle batteries, as well as batteries for solar power, wind power, and other renewable energies.

While expanding overseas, Kung Long did not follow in other Taiwanese businessmen’s footsteps to set up its battery factories in China, but chose Vietnam as a production base in an effort to manage production risk and expand sales.

Born in 1938, Li led the Nantou City-based manufacturer to expand its market share in the lead-acid batteries. In 1996, he set up two factories in Vietnam, led his employees to start from scratch there, and then transferred Kung Long production lines from Taiwan to the Ben Luc and Duc Hoa Districts in Vietnam.

After the operation of 21 years, Kung Long has become the largest lead-acid battery plant in Vietnam and its market share in that country has surpassed one-third.

Since its inception in 1990, the Nantou City-based manufacturer has been committed to improving product quality because Li is convinced that only the stable product quality is the cornerstone of the company’s sustainable development.

Thus, from 1991 on, Kung Long has obtained a series of certifications including UL Standards, accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); ISO 9002, accredited by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA); VdS, approved by VdS Inspection Services in Germany; ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, accredited by Bureau Veritas subsidiary BVQI; ISO 9001 Quality Management System; OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series); and CE Mark, approved by the European Union (EU).

In addition, Kung Long factory in the Ben Luc District, Vietnam, also obtained the VdS Certification in 2003 and TL9000 Telecommunication Quality Management System in 2008.

The product quality of Kung Long not only gained recognition from well-known multinational companies from Taiwan and abroad, but also won the prestigious Taiwan Excellence Awards, given in 1998 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

To look ahead in the future, Kung Long will still continue to introduce new technologies and invest in cutting-edge equipment in a bid to demonstrate its mission and promise to keep up with current trends, pursue sustainable development, and provide its customers with state-of-the-art products and services.
